Start Working

As a former resident of Mullica Township I stop in from time to time to see how things are going in the political arena. Sadly the news seems always a little more like soap opera that orderly public discourse.

I'd like to know if there is anyone in M.T. busy on the large number of public grants that are currently on the table as part of the National stimulus package. Politics being what they are, I realize that some in the township may be opposed to participation, but I urge the politicians to get busy and start writing on behalf of the public.

Across the country smart municipalities are putting pettiness aside and looking for ways to use federal funds to improve services or to take on projects that have been sidetracked by loss of local funding. It seems in the past that M.T. has been willing to take what ever share the County or the State is willing to send their way. That is a lazy approach and will not result in much progress. There must be improvement to infrastructure, schools or human services that could us this help. Does anyone have a "wish list" for public projects

Come together, review the numberous grants out there, compare them to the needs in the community and start writing. Hire a grant writer if you need too. But do something. Don't wait for the County or State to find M.T. act on your own behalf.

Anthony Gabris, who is running for Township Committee this year, together with his co-candidate Sue Polk, speaks about this very issue in their introductory campaign letter that introduces themselves and tells why they are running for office.

Not all grant requests necessarily have to originate from the government. Other can apply when government won't.

ELWOOD FIRE COMPANY GETS HOMELAND SECURITY GRANT

The Elwood Fire Company recently received a $59,000 Homeland Security grant and the money has been spent for pagers and turn out gear for better communication in the case of an emergency and better protection for those important first responders who make the bulk of the emergency calls here in Mullica. The Elwood Fire Company recently acknowledged on the bulletin board in front of their Fire House the assistance they received in applying for this grant by Mary Hunt.

Re 8:18 pm
Why did the Republican Committee try to cover this up? I remember they even made the firemen take take down a "Thank You Mary Hunt" sign from the building.
Were they embarrassed that someone took the effort to do something for this town?

And because they thanked Mary Hunt for her help, Mullica Township Committee has treated Elwood Volunteers like dirt ever since.

No one on committee at the time ever publicly acknowledged the receipt of the $59,000 grant at any committee meeting. Nothing in the paper, no announcement from LoBiondo, as though it never happened.

And who was mayor, deputy mayor and public safety head when it was decided not to give credit to the EVFC in 2005?
Kathy Chasey, mayor.
Bruce Crowe, deputy mayor and public safety head.
Our two current republican candidates.
This says a lot about who they are and how they operate.
(And also Janet Forman, who sat on committee then too but thankfully is not running for re-election this year.)

This might shed some light on why the EVHC was shunned by the committee in 2005. Fill in the blanks.

Subject: Question: Larry, do Mullica or fire cos. apply for grants? Sweetwater Resident

RESPONSE: Yes...
Because the Fire Companies are incorporated as separate entities their grants do not flow through Mullica's Chief Financial Officer (CFO). gary THE MUKTAR franklyn has successfully submitted grant applications for Mullica's fire companies for a number of grants.

Also, I believe that Ms. Hunt was in the midst of fighting the dump in Mullica and that may have factored into why she was not mentioned.
