Does anyone know what is planned for the Sweetwater Casino? This weekend there was nothing going on. No stakes were visible marking what might be the outline of a new building, and no equipment was standing by to dig the new foundation. There were a few large bearded motorcyclists present, hanging around, leaning on their Harleys, while looking wistfully at the remains of what was once their weekend hangout.
All of the signage has been removed other than a sign saying that boat slips are available for the coming summer season. Will the main attraction for the resident boaters be the bull dozed remains of what was once the signature location of our small village?
Rumors are afloat of course. They include a scenario where the restaurant will be replaced with luxury waterfront condos.

Is it true that Anastasi and the other partner were just leasing the restaurant and wouldn't that mean they wouldn't get the insurance money anyway, unless they had some sort of renters insurance? I'm betting nothing is going up there.
I'm also wondering why, if it was cleared as accidental, the insurance company hasn't paid up. Are they doing their own investigation?
The property alone is worth a decent chunk of change and I would bet the owner's could sell the property and wouldn't bother putting up another restaurant because it went through several owners/leasers over the years and it's reputation wasn't what is once was in the 60's and 70's.
Maybe waterfront senior housing? Low traffic, nice views......or perhaps something like Mullica Woods there. I doubt the neighbors would want something so "unseemly" in their part of town, but it's just a thought.
Once again, a rumor that I heard was that the "boys" owned the restaurant, but that the former owner was still holding the mortgage. If that is the case, any insurance payments would have to go through the former owner to the present owners.
I saw a sign there a few months ago saying that an insurance adjuster, Altman and Altman had been hired by the owners. They would be the ones negotiating with the insurance company.
The restaurant site would be very valuable real estate if it were approved for housing. I doubt that it would be another Mullica Woods (not that there is anything wrong with that).
Nothing wrong with Mullica Woods, but I think that the neighbors would feel it would make their property values go down having a "mobile home community" or even dense housing next door to them or on their street. Sweetwater considers themselves above Nesco, Devonshire and Elwood, where it would be fine to have it in those neighborhoods, just not theirs.
Who is the former owner holding the mortgage? Who is renting out the boat slips?
As a resident of Sweetwater, I can tell you that we does thunk that we's our better than the Nesconians, Elwoodies and Devonshirinians. Are kids have shoes on their feets and clean britches.
Hey, 4:06pm and 5:15pm posters.
What about us Weekstownians? Did you forget us?
VOTE BRUCE CROWE FOR MAYOR
Dang, sure did forget Weekstown and I apologize.
RE: 6:40 PM poster: Is Janet Forman not running this year?
No, Janet is running this year - away from public opinion about her.
Re 6:40 pm
You're leaving these comments all over the place. Are you in the advertising department of Verizon?
WHO CARES ABOUT JANET FORMAN OR BRUCE CROWE, THE QUESTION IS ABOUT THE SWEETWATER CASINO, LETS STICK TO THE SUBJECT LINE AND TRY TO FIND OUT WHATS UP WITH THE CASINO.
Does anyone know how many acres that piece of property has or it's zoning? I remember hearing that the owners had to rebuild in the same place on the old foundation because of the Pinelands.
Maybe that will change with the new Pinelands Map. I don't know.
I think for the benefit of the community we need to replace the old Casino with a new restaurant. There is absolutely nothing and no where to go here without out it. Housing is a horrible idea and the Sweetwater Casino gave us the opportunity to all get together more as a community, i.e. the Regatta, etc. Since the Forks Restaurant closed, Sweetwater Casino was all we had.
In this economy its probably not the best time to invest in a restaurant.
That's for sure. Tom's Place has been for sale for years.
Restaurants in Mullica:
Billy's Oak Grove
Columbia II
Mullica Pizza & Grill.
Also, there are plenty of nearby restaurants in Hammonton and Egg Harbor.
Yes, 9:36 am, and these are accessible by boat. Just attach the trailer to your pickup and off you go.
These are good restaurants. Well, at least one of them is, but I think we need a waterfront restaurant and as of now we have none.
Then I guess you'll have to tie up at Matt's Riverside Pizza in Green Bank while you're waiting.
Matt's Pizza on the Mullica River was closed last August, and I think part of or most of July.
Great Pizza, by the way..just not in Mullica.
May have to get a faster boat and go to Oyster Creek or Motts Creek Inn, but it would be easier if they would just rebuild the SC.
CLOSE THE GIFT SHOP AND PUT A BAR IN THERE FOR NOW.
The bar in the gift shop is a great idea. Maybe serve a little seafood too, Hmmm..... crab cake sandwiches sounds good!
All we need is a tiki bar, the boaters would be happy and it would bring the community back!! I'm over 6 packs!!
Tiki bar at the Sweetwater is open and ready for business......
and fyi...the ins proceeds have been tied up in court for 2 years now. the broker of record won't pay out the proceeds of the policy....former owner will be paid first (held mtg) and then balance will be paid to current owners. no word on rebuilding plans until court case is cleared up.....
Today is 6/7/2010. It is the two year anniversary for my wife and I. We were married at the Sweetwater Casino. The people that worked there were great. They made our day that much more special. It is sad that they still have not been able to rebuild yet. It would be a shame if they don't. I would love to have a place to come back to for future anniversaries. Bring the Sweetwater Casino back.
I was supposed to be married there , the October after the place burned down. me & my husband and others I am sure, STILL are waiting for our refunds back for our wedding deposits! And I know they have a tiki bar running there now on the deck and live music-I think its all a huge bunch crap. All emails to the owners regarding this have been ignored along with any phone calls my family has made-that balance that the owners are supposed to get back from the insurance company better go back to the people who paid their good money to hold the events there. Especially after the hostess Kathy who worked with us at sweetwater who frog rock then took in and hired-decided to up and leave/QUIT Frog Rock and lose all of my menu selections and paperwork on us a month prior to our wedding. For this stress we went through...I think we should be paid back.
I hope you get your money back someday.
