He wants to allow nature to take its course, to finish the work of dying that her body started but for some reason could not complete 15 years ago. Terri’s parents say Terri would want to go on because that’s what God wills. Who knows the mind of God? Those who claim to speak for God make idols of themselves and place unspeakable burdens of guilt and fear on those who quietly disagree with them. My heart breaks for Terri’s family, whose sorrow defies measurement, but removing the feeding tube once and for all may, in this instance be the most loving thing to do. M
