Subject: Trench War: Larry with apologies to Ernest Hemingway: "Ask not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee" summarizes the demise of the National Hockey League's season. The acrimony between the owners, players and the ever diminishing fan base may never be completely resolved. What began as a struggle of wills between control and avarice ended not as a temporary stalemate but as immovable trench warfare with mounting casualties from all sides. Viewing the potential mortal wound taken by hockey, perhaps a key lesson for all owners, players and agents of major professional sports is not to regard the excessive salary demands for millions of dollars like mere bus tokens. The breaking point for the National Basketball Association, the National Football League and Major League Baseball cannot be far away. N
