Subject: Martha’s easy sentence: Larry, it seems to me that the whole bizarre story of Martha Stewart’s conviction and jail term is symbolic or some of the basic inanities of our criminal justice system. People say that with her prison stay she has paid the price for her crime. Nonsense! We the taxpayers have paid and are still paying for the cost of her incarceration and house arrest. She emerges from her “vacation” richer than ever and with her diva status intact, if not enhanced. Why are white collar criminals occupying jail cells that ought to be used for those who commit crimes of violence? White collar criminals , motivated by amoral greed, should be punished by hitting them where it hurts the most; in the pocketbook. Celebrities like Stewart should have had thier properties and fortunes confiscated to let them experience life for a while at a poverty level to go along with obligatory public service.
