Subject: Baseball Records: Larry, Mark McGwire should be stripped of the home run title he won in 1998 when he hit 70 home runs. In addition, he should be banned from baseball for his evasiveness in his testimony at the congressional hearings. His behavior at the hearings when he was questioned about his steroid use {requires} a punishment no less than banishment. For years, it was well known that steroids were becoming a problem in baseball, yet no one was willing to confront the problem head on. Neither baseball commissioner Bud Selig nor union chief Donald Fehr had any sense of conviction when it came to solving the rampant steroid use that allowed the likes McGwire to stain the game of baseball. Instead of chastising Jose Canseco for writing the book “Juiced,” which describes in detail steroid use in baseball, all of us who love baseball should thank him for exposing a problem that has become dangerous and out of control. How can any one of us believe that McGwire’s 1998 record of 70 home runs or the current home run record set by Barry Bonds or the many home runs hit by others were achieved by utilizing talent and pure physical strength and not achieved with the help of steroids? I doubt any of us can truly be sure those records are real or were inflated by drugs. J
