‘What kind of government would cancel the vote of its own citizens, and replace it with non-citizens?’

 

House Democrats voted for a bill on Friday that would allow illegal immigrants to vote in local elections and force future presidents to release their tax returns to Congress. 

 

The bill, HR 1, or the For the People Act, was the Democrats’ top legislative priority this year and passed the House in a 228-197 vote. It claimed it would expand voter registration and access, as well as redefining campaign-finance laws.
“We are prepared to open up the political process and let all of the people come in,” Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., said.
Illegal immigrants and non-citizens are not legally allowed to vote in federal elections, but Republicans worry that HR 1 will provide yet another incentive for families to attempt to gain access to the country.
“It sounds like I’m making it up. What kind of government would cancel the vote of its own citizens, and replace it with non-citizens?” Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, said.

The bill would also require presidential and vice presidential candidates to release their tax returns — an underhanded swipe at President Donald Trump, who refused to release his returns.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said the bill “restores the people’s faith that government works in the public’s interest, the people’s interest, not the special interests” and “ensures clean, fair elections, and fights voter suppression.”
The bill is unlikely to ever become law—Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said he won’t even bring the bill to a vote.
He decried the legislation as a massive power grab by the Democrats, dubbing it the “Democrat Politician Protection Act.”
“H.R.1 is a blatant power grab to give Washington bureaucrats control over what American citizens can say about politics, how we can say it, and how we cast our ballots,” McConnell wrote on Twitter.
