"THE WEDDING IS OFF" IN MULLICA

It seems that for the second time in three years, Mullica Township residents will no longer have a municipal officiant available for weddings and civil unions. Last year, Michael St. Amour, as Deputy Mayor served as the officiant, but looks like residents will have to call on other municipalities to have a wedding/civil union performed once again. For more on this story, see the article on Keep Mullica Green.

So Mayor Forman and Deputy Mayor Kennedy have refused to officiate at ceremonies.
I would think that Forman would love to go to these weddings just to speak to the people and throw out some political spin.
Kennedy is giving up a free meal!! WOW!!
Gee, I wonder what would make them refuse to perform this service for our town.
They are public officials and should perform their duties regardless of personal reasons or prejudicial attitudes.

I bet the real reason they refused to officiate was to save face.
They would be embarrassed when people ran out of town because they didn't want Forman or Kennedy at their weddings.
I would "live in sin" if those two were my only choices.

The anti-same sex marriage flag has been a rallying point to get out the Republican base vote for a several years now. So, for any NJ Republican mayor to perform marriage ceremonies, which would then legally obligate him or her to possibly have to perform an occasional civil union, seems to go against the party's social platform. In Deputy Mayor Kennedy's case, an nominal Democrat and not bound by this policy, it appears to be more of a case of it being a personal decision.

No, the real reason is that they are both bigots.

Judges in larger communities, who have court on the daily basis like Atlantic City and Hamilton Township perform both marriages and civil unions, no matter what their political party affiliation is because they are there most days and available during the week for such services.

I understand the party's social platform, however one would think that in this day and age such prejudices would be left behind and let's be frank, not all people who are registered Republican's completely agree with the entire social platform of the party, just like not all Democrats agree with the entire platform of the party. There are some to the extreme left and some to the extreme right and lots right in the middle.

Mayor Forman doesn't seem like an ultra-conservative to me at all, which leads me to believe she just doesn't care to perform the ceremonies for the community.

The 4:24 pm poster is correct that most people today (in NJ), no matter what their party affiliation, are not prejudiced against gays; however, one still has to appeal to the party's base to get out the vote on election day and on the Republican side a good portion of the core is still "anti-gay". So an elected official's decision to perform marriages and civil union services, often transcends one's personal beliefs, just to be on the safe side for the next election. It's the same reason that they would oppose gun safety laws. It's nothing personal. It's a political decision. I believe that there is an unspoken understanding among NJ's Republican mayors not to perform marriage ceremonies because it obligates them to perform civil unions too. They're already tried to get an exemption from the rule.

Why would a homophobe like Kennedy and a hypocrite like Forman want to perform any marriages at all? Forman having been burned in her own sorry marriage probably does not believe in it. Kennedy does not believe in marriage of a man and man or woman and woman because it is against his religious principles. His religious principle is that you can only marry your sister.
