At
State House press conference, Senate President Sweeney says there won’t
be a legislative pathway to legal recreational marijuana, siting the
Murphy admin’s decision to proceed to expand medical marijuana, removing
some of the urgency of passage for several members.
Sweeney said he will instead work with Sen. Nick Scutari to move forward with a referendum vote in 2020. The legislature, in the meantime, will move to expand the state’s medical program and an expungement bill. “I thought we were going to get it done in the first hundred days of Murphy’s term. I thought it was the right thing to do; I still do, but people have strong feelings,” Sen. Sweeney said.
