The recent second debate in South Carolina showed off the ten middle aged while guys running for the Republican nomination for U.S. President next year...'big tent' Republican Party, it ain't. The first debate showed that 3 of the ten (Arkansas, Kansas and Oklahoma residents) simply did not believe in evolution and bought the Bible version that the planet earth is only 5,000 years old. These guys just repudiate science at any level of contradiction with a literal reading of their Koran/Bible…and they differ from extreme dangerous Muslims in their desire for making America a country governed by religious laws as revealed in their special holy book, HOW?
Hey, but that was 3 of 10 and they were really the less known guys for most of us. So the second debate earlier this week, revealed stuff about the three chief Republican guys ...that should really be scary to rational Americans. In fairness, the forum was before that all newly important core element of today’s Republican Party…Christian ultra right nut wing extremists of the Taliban ilk of Pat Robertson and recently deceased Jerry Falwell (who if there is a hell, has a front row burner set on 'high' reserved for himself).
The 3 Republicans at the top of today’s media list are McCain, Gulliani and Romney. Romeny when asked about closing the illegal prison where the Red Cross and other human rights groups have alleged prisoners are tortured and the international community which include many countries that are our friends ...have reviled the ‘gulag’ like lack of due process…calling for the prisons closing…Romney told the assembled Christian Fascists that he wanted a ‘doubling in size’ of Guantanamo, ‘where enemies of America could be held without access to lawyers’ or any kind of opportunity to prove their innocents via the constraints of the U.S. Constitution and its foolish reference to inalienable human rights and fairness (due process). HUH?
Then there was Rudolph Gulliano fully using as a touchstone to his Italian roots seeming to embrace ‘Il Duche’ (Fascist, Mussolini) in calling for the torture of prisoners as long as we don’t call it torture…water boarding he has no problem with and other stuff , well, just don’t call it torture. The Fascists in the audience just loved it …as the loud applause indicated.
Yes, John McCain got the torture question for the most part right!! As a prisoner of war for 5 years in Vietnam, he articulated the position of our Founding Fathers; that America holds itself to higher standard than other countries and seeks to uphold human principles that don’t allow for torture. He further noted that torturing so called ‘enemy combatants’ to save known lives at risk, only places thousands more American lives in danger via the creation of more people who hate America…and torture validates that hatred. McCain got this one so right and it is at our peril that we embrace the ‘fear’ of ‘them’ that Fascists use to justify their holding on to power.
John McCain however lost it when he repudiated his courageous vote against the Bush tax cuts for the super rich. The abandonment of the core GOP doctrine of fiscal conservatism and responsibility is an effective tool in getting elected by today’s Republicans. The calling for more and more tax cuts that pile more an more debt on the future. Bush Republicans elected with a surplus and in control of the Presidency and Congress have just looted the treasury and exponentially run up a massive deficit with tax cuts and sweetheart deals for their campaign contributors.
They talk about tax cuts and limited government as they expand government and spend more and more pork for their friends and run up ever greater debt … all the while believing that the American people are too stupid to see the scam. So far they have been right…and the audience of southern white Christians seemed too stupid or inbred to see through the lies and betrayal of the heritage of America.
The old Southern populist Huey Long would not have been fooled, ...he said, FASCISM WILL NOT COME TO AMERICA AT THE END OF GUN…BUT WRAPPED IN THE AMERICAN FLAG. Today’s Republicans are validating that epiphany.
And just to further establish the fact that there is a difference, Democrats have introduced legislation in Congress to close Guantanamo.
