Subject: Are we on the road to Fascism? Paul von Hindenburg, a World War I hero and leader of the Junker class, was president of Germany's Weimar Republic in the 1930s. He was a conservative of little kultur. Hindenburg selected Adolf Hitler to form a government in 1933. Once he became chancellor, Hitler issued decrees converting the republic to a dictatorship. Neither Hindenburg nor other members of his class lifted a finger to stop him. The creation of a Nazi dictatorship was because of the lack of commitment to democracy by the conservative class. This is the lesson of history to ponder when we consider the exceedingly thin line of conservatives — present only in the Senate, and not the House — committed to the preservation of our democracy. This fast-disappearing breed is required so that our government of, by and for the people shall not perish. The liberals, cultured or not, cannot do it by themselves. David
