Subject: Possible fix for lack of cell phone service in Mullica Township: Verizon to erect short-term cell tower, By Lori Sykes Copyright © 2003, South Florida Sun-Sentinel; Miramar · A cell phone company plans to put a temporary tower at Bluegrass Lakes Park while waiting for a permanent site. At a recent meeting, commissioners voted 5-0 to allow Verizon Wireless Personal Communications to place a temporary mobile facility on Honey Hill Road, just west of Flamingo Road. The tower is on wheels and can be removed in case of a hurricane. The facility consists of a modular building, which serves as an equipment trailer, and a tower surrounded by a security fence. The phone company will pay the city $25,000 to lease 1,600 square feet of space for up to one year. If Verizon needs the land beyond a year, the company would rent it for $2,100 a month. The temporary tower will be used while Verizon waits to lease space on the Broward County Tower, also situated within the city. Commissioner George Pedlar suggested charging Verizon more money to use the site. However, Mayor Lori Moseley pointed out that this is land nobody is using right now. "They are going to pay for a year upfront," Moseley said. "If they only stay there for three or four months, we get to keep the rest." In 2002, the city voted to ensure that, rather than build new towers, cellular facilities be placed on existing structures. It also established that city-owned property be considered first. At the end of the lease, Verizon must remove all its equipment and restore the site to its original condition.
RESPONSE: Another interesting idea certainly worth exploring. Thanks Sweetwater Resident
