Subject: Fuel Conservation: There is a hole in the national energy bill that one could drive a large truck through. That is the lack of a very basic and easy to address issue, namely fuel conservation. We as a nation are just consuming too much fuel in our daily lives. SUVs that get gallons per mile in the low teens, plus other vehicles that are barely in the mid teens, are just unacceptable if we are serious about fighting “terrorism.” America has as a core strength the ability to address difficult technical problems and solve them. A simple challenge to automobile manufacturers to have gas mileage in the low 20s within two or three years is all that is needed. The Europeans have addressed this issue already. Why has the administration not challenged the automotive industry to rise to the occasion and aggressively address the situation? Carl S
